4. What we perceive as the major categories in the use of the Estonian adessive case seems to be a reflection of the interaction between the inherent meaning of the noun in the adessive form and the context in which the noun occurs. The most important contextual factor seems to be the semantics of the predicate verb.
We have seen that even if we group the temporal and locative use together and regard them as the primary function of the Estonian adessive case, we must conclude that one out of two occurrences of the Estonian adessive is not used in its primary function: a bout half of the occurrences of the adessive NP are instances of the adessive-dative.
It is likely that there is a linguistic change going on in the syntax and semantics of the Estonian adessive case: the form is gaining more and more of the abstract meaning typical of the dative case in many languages at the expense of the locative-temporal meaning.
