This small Estonian-Japanese dictionary is a revised, and somewhat enlarged edition of the dictionary of the same name which was compiled for the intensive course of the Estonian language held on July 22 - August 31, 1991, at the Institute for the Study of Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
The first edition of this dictionary consisted of approximately 760 entries, i.e., 734 entries from the word list Базовый словарь эстонского языка ([1]) plus twenty-odd words such as jaapani which I considred essential for the Japanese learner of Estonian. The fourteen entries newly added to this new edition are aeglaselt, kahtlema, keetma, kiiresti, kuskile, kuskilt, lühem, omavahel, paremini, põletama, ruttu, süli, vahetama, vara. Each entry word is provided with at least one illustrative sentence.
Any overlong syllable is marked with an acute accent (`) unless it occurs in a monosyllabic word or monosyllabic constituent of a compound.
I am grateful to Toomas Help, who produced the greater part of the Estonian sentences as well as marked the overlong syllables with the accute accent for the 1991 version of this dictionary. Thanks are also due to Mayumi Sakamoto, who read the manuscript of the 1991 edition and made many useful suggestions on the Japanese translation. Errors that remain are all mine.
